Defending a Roundhouse Kick

Making it a timely move of the week this go-round! Ronda Rousey was eventually felled by a roundhouse kick and follow-up punches courtesy of Holly Holm this weekend, a fact you all know by now if you have had an even passing acquaintance with the internet in the past couple of days. And while I am not suggesting anything short of a taser or Mjolnir’s holy power could have stopped that doom stick of a kick by Ms. Holm, there ARE Brazilian Jiu Jitsu answers to strikes- in this case we see a scenario tailored to addressing defending a roundhouse kick. Things to notice are simple, as this defense is eminently timing-based: Working that angle when the kick comes in is pure finesse, which your ribs or forearm (hopefully) will attest to after enough reps. After which, the takedown should be a given as long as you maintain hungry-dog-after-a-bone control on the offending leg. As an addition, make sure to try and clear the second leg on the way down, and save yourself the hassle of getting caught up in half-guard once the action hits the ground!

Hope this helps, see you on the mats!
